▲Color Names (names.color.pizza)
eviks 7 hours ago [-]
This is a fundamentally unworkable/misleading approach to naming. For example, these 3 reds are perceptually identical #ff0000, #fe0002, #ff0d00, yet they have different names, which is a waste of names and is worse than having hex-based names (where at least 0.0...1% of people would be able to mix the values in their head and a bigger 0.0..% would see that the difference is tiny), and much worse than having names that are based off Red with some modifier describing the tiny difference based on what it is (e.g., 1% lighter)

> When creating new color names, it's essential to understand which areas of a color space are crowded and where new names can be added

Indeed it is. It's also essential to not add names in those uber-crowded areas

From the README, this is a collection of names, not a prescriptive proposal for definitive names. Walk over to your local hardware store's paint section and you'll see the same hundreds of names for off-white variations.

What's wrong with having different names for the same color?

It seems to me that you're thinking like a computer rather than like a human.

eviks 7 hours ago [-]
And to me it seems you're not thinking at all. Computers have no issue with extra names, it's the humans that are confused. Also you don't have "different names for the same color", e.g., red has a unique name "Red" and they've specifically deduplicated their data to have unique names-color combos. Why do you think that is?
carlosjobim 6 hours ago [-]
There is no confusion at all. A normal person can perfectly well understand that a color can have several different names. The majority of people are at least bilingual.
eviks 6 hours ago [-]
You're confused, the understanding that multiple names can exist isn't relevant. But for you to understand that you'd need to think and try to answer my question that tried to steer you into the right direction.
carlosjobim 6 hours ago [-]
People who are specialized and work with colors are better served by thinking in terms of how the colors are mixed and relate to each other. I do that, and probably you do too.

Normal people use color names, and there's practically no limit to how many different color names people can remember, especially since almost all come from real life objects. Salmon, spongecake, wine red, olive, neon pink, and so on. Having multiple names for the same or very similar colors is no problem, because there is no requirement for pinpoint accuracy when using names instead of numbers.

The color names people are giving in this project are however mostly low quality, and won't catch on anywhere. "Silent Breeze", "Energize" etc.

Have you talked to "normal people" about colors? They are notoriously bad at them and the limit of confusion is a rather low number, definitely orders of magnitude lower than 32k in this database.

> Having multiple names for the same or very similar colors is no problem.

Only if you dismiss clarity as a value "there is no requirement for pinpoint accuracy". At which point, though, what purpose does this database serve??? And again, this db is deduplicated, so it doesn't share your argument, hence it's legit highlighting where it falls short on deduplication.

> low quality "Silent Breeze"

that's a different fail, though not much different from other low quality real colors like Turquoise that did catch on

Man, this comment section is not good.

I was surprised recently when I tried to really dial in the colors on my personal website, and found that I perceive and get a different feeling from a hex code change of only 1. I didn’t test whether it’s just me or whether this particular color makes it more visible, but I did test a few monitors, including a bad one. So, I get feeling some way about a specific hex code, if you spent longer picking it than we usually do.

I do, though, wonder what the idea behind assembling a centralized registry is. Is it about making a few favorite very specific colors easier to refer to? Browsing colors? Browsing ideas people have about what colors mean? What would the ideal ultimate form of this list include, every color? What’s the difference between a good name and a bad one?

meodai 5 hours ago [-]
I mostly using it in my own tools so the its more then more a hex value. Its to convey something I can relay to... Sometimes palettes have very similar colors in it so having different names for it feels right.

the only color name I remember is rebeccapurple
sphars 5 hours ago [-]
Which has a bit of a somber but beautiful story behind the name

Amazing! Love the pixel art mode and being able pan and zoom around in 3D. It’s like exploring a world of colors and fun little art pieces and references, like C-3PO’s red arm.

I think I'll return here whenever I need pixel art!

Please can you add the colour names used by cars in the post war era.

For example, my father had a Ford Cortina in Saluki Bronze, which sounded better than Polished Turd, so the marketing men went with it, even though the latter was more accurate.

All of the automotive colours had imaginative names then, however, the colour was dependent on light, so a singular RGB value is always a bit naive.

Very impressive presentation, not sure it is a usable tool or a definite resource without Saluki Bronze though.

Oh car paints! good idea! PS: Saluki Bronze will be in teh next version
MisterMunchkin 11 hours ago [-]
Why would I pay you when I could slop out my own colour site? These kinds of things only worked in the age of things being hard. We don’t need to buy pixels anymore.
meodai 11 hours ago [-]
If you read the text on the support/ donation page you might discover why. I collected and invented these names over the past 10 years. There is a github history to back that. As well as a public API etc… so as the text sais it would be a symbolic gesture to help to pay for the infrastructure. And it is more effective than adding a donation button everywhere, since I already collected more than the over the previous 10 years

AI can steal from your github and call it research!

Love it.

Oh, it's yours! Thank you.

I've been using this dataset for two years now. It's really helped me in game development; specifically being able to use words instead of hex values in things like error messages and modeling palettes. "Blunt Violet" is much easier for me to parse than "0x8d697a".

I use simple Euclidean distance to find the nearest name for each used color. As a sanity check, I keep track of all colors that I have associated with names while the game is running and get a warning message if I ever associate more than one color to a given name. Outside of messing with a colorpicker, I never get that warning, so the perceptual space between names has been great.

the API can return it based on deltaE if you want. https://api.color.pizza/

theres way too much animation. I wanted to be able to click and see some of the names but the spacemountain zoom in and out was so annoying I left this comment instead
Leftium 5 hours ago [-]
Probably a different data source/mapping, but you may find this easier to use: https://www.color-blindness.com/color-name-hue/
carcabob 12 hours ago [-]
I agree. After tapping a color, the name appears for a split second before being hidden so it can start the animations, and you have to wait for the close button to animate in too. Super fun concept, and I don’t mind waiting for info to load, but having to wait with every color tap even to see the info that’s already loaded is a bit much.
