▲Apple may have an iPhone 18 Pro demand problem (androidauthority.com)
ksec 17 hours ago [-]
I thought Apple did poorly in this year 18 Pro Marketing.

The A20 Pro was a massive jump in performance per watt, meaning higher efficiency. A lot of site that latter discovered what A20 Pro were doing thought Apple under sell its achievement.

They should have provided battery life compare to 14 Pro and 15 Pro. Which is anywhere from 30% to 40% more. That is a huge jump and a lot of people are still on 13 - 15 range. That single reason should have pushed an upgrading cycle alone.

Every other phone has increased their price for a lot more in terms of percentage. Apple is actually on the lower side especially to entry model. Some how this message should have been marketed. A lot of iPhone user aren't aware that Android have gotten a lot more expensive as well for their flagship.

I would happily buy an iPhone Air if it didn't have a camera bump on top of another bump. Really missing lightweight and truly mobile smartphones. And phones that don't wobble on the table.

Simple: 17 Pro was near perfection and sold like hot cakes. People are not upgrading.

No reason to upgrade from 15 Pro to 18 pro. Recently refreshed the battery in 15 Pro for $60 and the phone feels new again. Processor and cameras are fine for all my daily needs as is the storage and all radio/wifi speeds.

I usually upgrade every 2 years. But looks like it will be at least 4 this time. Meanwhile still paying rent for iCloud/sevices … so Apple is still winning.

Might get a Duo for device testing but definitely won’t use it as a daily driver, no need for that much screen.

Just did an apple care battery swap while on vacation in Spain. Was able to just book a service appt from the Apple store in Valencia for my US iPhone 14 Pro. Trying to stick with a pre AI vintage for as long as possible. Meanwhile used Gemini to take all my iCloud data and pull it into a custom web service where I can scan through my history. Photos, messages etc. Then I nuked the iCloud subscription and lowered to free tier just for Notes across devices

I upgraded to an 18 pro from the 15 pro, partially on a whim since there were good trade in deals and partly because of the battery life promises. The battery is better, but I probably would have been fine just getting my old battery replaced. Other than that, I don't see really any other benefit. I preferred the smaller and lighter 15 pro model and it kind of pisses me off that they keep sneaking in an extra 0.1" and 10 grams every other year.

Yes, weight and size have been a major detracting factor for me as well. I’d also like some innovation on the basics: improving the keyboard which has been really bad since forever, enabling people to use any search engine in Safari, larger battery, interoperable USB-C connection without requiring specialized software, support for high-res audio codecs, in-place translation (like Firefox or mastodon client Phanpy). Give me a reason to upgrade. With past few generations and current one, there’s been none.

> enabling people to use any search engine in Safari

You can forget about that for as long as Google pays over $20 _billion_ per year to stay the default.

I just want a 4S sized phone made with modern parts. I also miss how the 4S camera looked, all the cameras since that one have produced weird looking images.

I would expect the 18 Pro to have 30% more battery life if not more compared to 15 Pro on a new battery.

The iPhone 17's colors were 1000x better, but also until the 16th this is premature. Does the dip match the surge for the Duo or is the Duo a flop.

I've upgraded to every new Pro/Plus/S phone since the 3GS but didn't get the 18 Pro because I'm going to try the Duo. If I hate it I'll return it and go back to my Cosmic Orange 17 Pro. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed that color, every previous phone of mine was "black".

It's not a demand problem, it's a pricing problem.

Clearly 15% of those missing customers will be getting the Duo.

There haven’t been any major reasons to upgrade in many years. What kept them afloat was their boutique branding, but people have less disposable income and sorry, having the cool new iPhone that looks and acts the exact same as the last 10 isn’t going to cut it anymore.

Thinner. Lighter. Slightly faster. More expensive. No one really cares. Their keynotes are monotonous, with long diatribes on how many oz they’ve shaved off hardware that no one can even notice during tests.

I’d advise them to innovate more but showing up with a VR headset and foldable phone many, many years after they’ve already been in the market shows they’re out of ideas.

Do we really really really need 20-something iterations of a product? At some point the Emperor's new clothes are going to really really show.-
altairprime 23 hours ago [-]
I’d love if my blouses were on their twentieth iteration without decaying quality every year for two decades like the clothes market has done recently; so, yes, we absolutely can benefit from such investment. Uniqlo is the only instance I know of a new clothes retailer publishing release notes for their iterations, so I know it’s possible and profitable, but it’s just extraordinarily rare in any segment — whether the emperor’s phone, or the emperor’s clothes.

Clothes with a changelog :)

Oh I hate this so much. Spend months trying to find a good, well made tshirt that’s out of a good quality fabric. Find one and a month or two later (after you’re sure of the quality) order a few more. Nope! Pattern is different, fabric is worse quality. Start the cycle again.

Yes!

I also hate that the sizing seems to vary for the same brand/shirt depending on when you buy.

gruturo 23 hours ago [-]
Honestly it may just be that lots of people - especially those with deep pockets - are going to buy the Duo instead. Not a mention in the article, maybe someone is short on Apple and could use a dip, so conveniently forgets a logical explanation.
