Scientists and engineers craft radio telescope bound for the moon (bnl.gov)
Animats 1 days ago [-]
"... infamously inhospitable place: the lunar far side. Named for its inability to be seen from Earth, this area of the moon sits in total darkness for 14 Earth days followed by 14 days of brutal sunlight. Without an atmosphere, temperatures swing from -280 to 280 degrees Fahrenheit and there’s no protection from cosmic radiation."

Just like the side of the moon that faces earth.

You know you're dealing with jokers when they use Fahrenheit in space.

Presumably, it's just badly phrased or was lost in transcription. Its inhospitability comes from an elevated risk of meteor strikes.

And the challenge of not being able to have direct communication with earth, you'd need to go via another satellite

Sweet. This is like half the plot of Space Brothers. I love seeing fiction become reality.
